Born in Detroit, Michigan, Tom Skerritt studied at Wayne State University and at UCLA. Originally interested in directing, he was performing in a Los Angeles theatre production, which led to his being cast in his first film, War Hunt (1961) where he met another young hopeful, Robert Redford.

Winner of the Emmy for Best Actor for his starring role in CBS's drama series, “Picket Fences,” Skerritt is one of the most versatile and acclaimed American actors. From his early role in “M*A*S*H,” to the critically lauded film, “Contact,” co-starring Jodie Foster, Skerritt's performances revealed his strength of subtlety in an array of television and film productions. Skerritt adds to his diverse roster of roles with his most recent movie, “Texas Rangers” in which he co-stars with Dylan McDermott, Rachel Leigh Cook and James Van Der Beek.

In addition to the highly successful “M*A*S*H,” Skerritt can count several classics among the more than 35 films he has made. In "The Turning Point," he played the understanding husband of Shirley MacLaine, in "Alien" he was the heroic captain of an infiltrated space ship. He was Sally Field's husband, Julia Roberts' father and Shirley MacLaine's nemesis in "Steel Magnolias" and the Presbyterian minister father of Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer in "A River Runs Through It."

Seeing Skerritt in Top Gun, where he played Tom Cruise's commander, convinced Paul Marciano, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of GUESS?, Inc. to fashion several spectacularly successful advertising campaigns around Skerritt's Hemingway-esque good looks, highlighting him as their first celebrity model.
His roles run the gamut from comedy, science fiction, Western and thrillers, to psychological dramas, romance and murder mysteries. In the television medium, Skerritt has starred in literally dozens of TV productions. They include guest appearances in several major series, including a highly acclaimed six-episode stint on “Cheers” as Kirsty Alley's boss and, more recently, as Jim Kellner on “Chicago Hope.”
In addition to starring on both the big and small screen, Skerritt has directed a myriad of television shows including "Divided By Hate," for the USA Network and several episodes of “Picket Fences”. His future plans include writing and directing theatrical film projects.
Although heavy work demands do not leave much time to spare, Skerritt tries to indulge in his favorite creative pastime - painting - whenever he gets a chance.
