July 1999 Yahoo!'s Web Celeb Alice In Chains It has been almost three years since the last new release from Alice in Chains, one of the best Alternative Rock groups around. This summer marks the release of NOTHING SAFE- THE BEST OF THE BOX, which consists of 15 tracks, including a new release - "Get Born Again" - that has taken over the airwaves across the country, and the complete 40-track set is coming out in the fall. Boasting a career that has spanned over a decade, Alice in Chains has been one of the most powerful forces in the history of Alternative Rock. The music industry has seen the coming and going of bands with break-ups, death and self-destruction, but Alice in Chains has always remained popular. From the days in the beginning of the Seattle scene, to the release of this box set, Alice in Chains has five platinum and/or multi-platinum albums to their credit and has consistently sold-out concerts worldwide. The idea for Alice in Chains developed in the mind of Layne Staley while he was still in high school. In 1987, Staley met guitarist Jerry Cantrell and, together, they developed the band by adding drummer Sean Kenny and bassist Mike Starr (who was later replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez, formerly of Ozzy Osbourne). A little less than two years after the band formed, Columbia Records signed Alice in Chains and for the next year set out touring as an opening act for various artists, with a promotional EP called We Die Young. Clubs - Alice In Chains In 1990, with the public hungry for a new, genuine sound, Alice in Chains released Facelift, a hard-hitting testimonial of the power and talent of this newly emerging band. The dark, eerie lyrics and stage presence of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell, combined with the unique sound, began to draw the attention of the rest of the world. The track "We Die Young" screamed up the metal music charts and Facelift was later certified gold. This was just the beginning. January 1991, the band appears in the Cameron Crowe film Singles, performing "Would?" while the "Man in the Box" video plays on MTV for over 16 weeks. Over the next few years, Alice in Chains toured with the "Clash Of The Titans" tour and opened up for Van Halen around the country. Meanwhile, they recorded Sap, the band’s second EP, and started working on their next full-length album Dirt, released in time coincide with their tour on the Lollapalooza 93 bill. Recorded over a seven day period in 1994, the band's third EP, Jar Of Flies, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album charts, the first and only EP to ever reach #1. After this, the band took a short break, from 1994-95, while Layne Staley worked with a band called Mad Season, which included Mike McCready of Pearl Jam. Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez also worked on side projects. Alice in Chains descended into the studio in the spring of 1995 to record ALICE IN CHAINS. Released on Halloween 1995, the CD debuts at #1 on the Billboard Top 200-album chart. Less than two months later ALICE IN CHAINS was certified gold and platinum. In July of 1996, the acoustic album they recorded with MTV Unplugged album was released in and turned platinum one month later. Over three years later, Alice fans are salivating, waiting to sink their teeth into the long awaited, highly anticipated Alice In Chains boxed set. Throughout these years, rumors have emerged about the state of the band members and the uncertainty of the group's future, but this boxed set that includes brand new tracks has quelled those rumors and promises to satiate those hungering for a new Alice in Chains release.
