Denzel Washington

Considered one of the most handsome men in Hollywood, Denzel Washington has been seen on both television and the silver screen. From his big break in the NBC TV hit medical series "St. Elsewhere" as the handsome Dr. Chandler, to his new role in the movie The Hurricane, Denzel has delivered nothing but award-worthy performances.

Graced with the good looks of a movie star, Denzel was born on December 28th, 1954, in Mt. Vernon, NY. His father was a Pentecostal minister, and he spent a great deal of time in his mother's beauty salon, and he worked a lot of part time jobs as a child in other barber shops and beauty parlors.

At the age of 14, Denzel and his sister were shipped off to boarding school to save them from the family situations that eventually led to the divorce of his parents. After high school, Washington enrolled at Fordham University in New York City. Here he dabbled in acting but stayed until 1977, when he graduated with his B.A. Denzel then moved out to San Francisco to attend the American Conservatory Theater on a Thespian scholarship. He left shortly after enrolling to start his professional career.

Throughout the 1980s, he worked mostly in the television world. His first role was in the NBC television movie "Wilma" (1977), about the Olympic runner Wilma Rudolph, as her boyfriend. He must have impressed the execs at NBC because, just a few years later, Denzel was chosen for the plum role of Dr. Chandler in NBC's hit medical series "St. Elsewhere" (1982), a role that he would play for six years. This was his big chance. After that, Denzel took another big step onto the silver screen when, in 1989, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Tripp, the runaway slave, in Ed Zwick's powerful historical masterpiece Glory.

In the 1990s, Denzel's movie career took off. Not only did he average at least two movies a year, but he was able to work with such big names as Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Spike Lee. Starting in 1990, Denzel starred in two movies, one with Bob Hoskins called Heart Condition, and the other a Spike Lee Joint, Mo' Better Blues. His childhood came back to help Washington in 1992 when he starred in the title role of Malcolm X, the influential African-American leader. He was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this role. In 1993, an equally challenging role came Denzel's way with the movie Philadelphia. In this movie, also starring Tom Hanks, Denzel's character, a homophobic lawyer named Joe Miller, is hired by Hanks' character, who is dying of AIDS, to dispute a wrongful termination suit. That was a busy year for Denzel, starring in two other successful films - Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and The Pelican Brief, co-starring Julia Roberts.

1995 - Denzel Washington was in Crimson Tide, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Virtuosity - a submarine action thriller, a noirish detective story and a sci-fi thriller, respectively. Running through his impressive resume, 1996 - Denzel starred as Lt. Cmdr. Hunter in Courage Under Fire, which also starred Matt Damon and Meg Ryan. In 1998, Denzel starred in his second Spike Lee Joint, He Got Game, Fallen and then in The Siege, and in 1999 he starred in The Bone Collector where he was cast as a quadriplegic detective alongside Angelina Jolie.

Through out the 90's and the long list of movies that Denzel Washington has contributed to, he has still managed to keep up with the daunting task of being a husband and father. Denzel spends as much time as possible with his wife Pauletta and their four children. He is also a spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

Denzel's latest film is The Hurricane, in which he portrays a man wrongfully accused of triple homicide. The movie is based on the true story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's accusation, imprisonment, and road to salvation that was paved by the help and the love of an outsider, a young student named Lazarus, played by Vicellous Reon Shannon.
