Yahoo!'s Web Celeb Calista Flockhart May 1999

One of many interesting facts about the picturesque Calista Flockhart is that, in Greek, Calista means 'most beautiful,' although the modest actress of stage, screen, and television is reluctant to admit it. Calista was born in Illinois to a father who was a Kraft Food executive and a mother who was a school teacher. Her family moved four times while she was growing up, later settling in Medford, New Jersey.

After high school, Calista attended Rutgers University. To avoid the lack of respect an undeclared major usually receives, Calista enrolled in the fine arts program, where she was bit by the acting bug. After appearing in college and community theatre and, of course, graduating from Rutgers, she packed up and moved to New York to pursue an acting career.

During Calista Flockhart’s theatre career, she performed in the off-Broadway productions of "Wrong Turn at Lungfish," "All for One," and "Three Sisters" as Irma. Later, as a distinguished stage actress, Calista made her Broadway debut in "The Glass Menagerie," which won her the Theatre World Award and the Clarence Derwent Best New Talent Award. While working in the Theatre District of New York, Calista also supplemented her acting career by accepting small parts on daytime television. These bit roles led her to her first substantial television role opposite Kevin Spacey in "Darrow." This in turn led to her first starring role in the HBO series "The Secret Life of Mary Margaret: Portrait of a Bulimic." All kidding aside, it was not her biography.

On the silver screen, Calista’s career grew from a small part in Robert Redford’s Quiz Show to a larger part in The Birdcage with Robin Williams, and now, it has blossomed to major supporting roles like the one she played in Telling Lies in America.

Wanting to continue with her rising theatre career and not interested in any television roles, Calista was reluctant to go to the casting call for "Ally McBeal," a new Fox sitcom and a role that was said to fit her personality perfectly. After being dragged by friends to her first audition for "Ally McBeal" with the creator, David E. Kelly, she was offered the lead role, beating out hundreds of other actresses.

Despite any nasty Hollywood rumors, a healthy Calista Flockhart can currently be seen in the hit Fox television show as the star of "Ally McBeal," and also as Helena in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," with a star-studded cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci and Rupert Everett.
