The Fugees may be to hip-hop what The Rolling Stones are to rock and roll, the greatest hip-hop band in the world. As one third of that band, along with Wyclef and Pras, Lauryn Hill sets the standard by which all female
"hip-hop" performers and albums will be judged. Especially since her last release, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" broke records by selling more than 422,000 units the first week.

Only 23 years old, Lauryn met Wyclef and Pras, her fellow Fugees, back in high school in New Jersey. Wyclef and Pras, originally from Haiti, were
already in a band and were looking to hook up with a female singer. Boy,
did they make a good choice! Originally called Tranzlator Crew, they
changed the name to The Fugees, as in "refugees," because of their Haitian origin.
They started recording their debut album, "Blunted on Reality" in 1993. Being the kind of person that doesn't let adversity stand in her way, Lauryn came back from that critically less-than-acclaimed album to co-write, co-produce, and serve as featured performer in the Fugees second attempt, "The Score," which brought them worldwide fame. "The Score" won two 1996 Grammy Awards, one for Best Rap Album and the other for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for Lauryn's amazing cover of Roberta Flack's classic hit "Killing Me Softly," which kind of became the "hip-hop" anthem for 1996. It just goes to show you should "never give up before the miracle occurs."

"The Score" went on to sell over 17 million units making Lauryn and The Fugees the biggest selling rap group of all time. Lauryn also devotes her
time to "giving back" to the community. She runs "The Refugee Project," a
non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of inner city kids.

A singer, a rapper, an actress, an activist and a mother, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" seems like a misnomer. She could certainly
teach a class on how to overcome setbacks and go on to become a huge star.
|
Lauryn has received a tremendous amount of media attention, including the coveted cover of Time Magazine and a mind-boggling ten 1999 Grammy Award Nominations.
These are just some of the reasons we've chosen Lauryn as the very first
celeb to be profiled in this, our new site, Music WebCeleb.
