Yahoo!'s Web Celeb Nicolas Cage

It's probably safe to say that if most people had to prove themselves to their boss by eating a live cockroach, they'd probably pass on the job and tell their boss where he could go, but not Nicolas Cage. In "Vampire's Kiss," he had the opportunity to eat a raw egg, but instead opted to confront his fear of bugs by eating a live roach. How better to affect the audience? The only problem was director Robert Bierman made him do another take, so he had to eat two live roaches. Supposedly, he didn't sleep well for months afterwards. It's also said that he had two teeth pulled without anesthetic for the movie "Birdy" which he did in 1984.

Nic Cage is the consummate artist. Obviously, he'll do anything to make his role as an actor more powerful and unforgettable. It started as a child when he disguised himself as his own brother to save himself from a neighborhood bully.

Born in Los Angeles, on January 7, 1964, to August Coppola, a literature professor at Cal State, and Joy Vogelsang, a dancer/choreographer, Nic wound up moving to San Francisco with his father after his parents divorced when he was 12. His mom suffered from depression for many years and unfortunately was absent for much of his childhood. She has since recovered.

Nic's uncle, famous director Francis Ford Coppola, gave Nic his start in acting and soon after that nicolas Coppola became Nicolas Cage, deciding on "Cage" as a surname as a tribute to comic-book superhero Luke Cage and composer John Cage.

Not one to let bad reviews bother him, he "took his beating like a man" for his lead role opposite Kathleen Turner in "Peggy Sue Got Married." That was in 1986, when he chose to go against his uncle's directions and experimented by playing the character as a buck-toothed guy with a really weird voice. Nic actually welcomed bad reviews because "that would mean I was doing something that challenged the critics." He personally is happy with how that film turned out, but his uncle hasn't offered him another job since.

The amazing thing about it is that sometimes what looks like the worst thing that can happen becomes the best thing that could happen. In this case, his offbeat performance piqued the interest of both Cher, who fought to have him as her love interest in 1987's "Moonstruck," and the Coen brothers, who put Nic into his first adult comedy, "Raising Arizona," in that same year. It was that film that started him on his road to stardom, and led to 20 more films in the next 11 years.

Nic makes sure he enjoys the fruits of his labours. Married to actress Patricia Arquette, herself from a show business family, they own several amazing homes, including a Victorian mansion in San Francisco and a faux-German castle in the Hollywood Hills. Nic also has quite a collection of European sports cars. They recently signed on to do a film together for the first time, in Martin Scorsese's upcoming "Bringing Out The Dead."

In the last couple of years, Nic has made his mark with "The Rock," with Sean Connery, "Con-Air" - in which he played an heroic ex-con - and "Face/Off," in which he starred with John Travolta. It was his amazing performance in 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas" as a suicidal alcoholic that won him his Oscar for Best Actor. Cage's latest role is starring in the Columbia Pictures film "8mm," directed by Joel Schumacher. Nic Cage is a truly star worthy of his own page on WebCeleb.
