Yahoo! Web Celeb - October 1999 Edward Norton

In 1996, out from the shadows of such actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Matt Damon came a virtually unknown face to score a major supporting role in Primal Fear, a movie opposite Richard Gere. Edward Norton beat out over 2,100 other actors and it was rumored that even Gere himself credited Norton with saving this otherwise dead project. This modest graduate of Yale had exactly what the producers from Paramount were looking for to fill the role of a harmless choirboy accused of murdering an archbishop. Norton perfected a slight southern accent and blended it with an occasional stutter and won the part in only two screen tests.

On the strength of these screen tests and before the movie was canned and released to the general public he had already signed a deal to appear in Woody Allen's film Everybody Says I Love You (1996), also as Larry Flynt's attorney in the controversial The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), and turned down a movie with Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Franz because of scheduling conflicts. Virtually overnight Norton was a star.
Raised in Maryland by civil servant parents, Edward Norton lived the middle class life. He started appearing in plays at the age of five and attended schools throughout his academic career that were focused toward the performing arts. After attending Yale, and stopping over in Japan to build low-income housing for an organization that was founded by his grandfather, Edward moved to Manhattan to begin what was fated to be a short climb up the long ladder of success. Living the life of a real New York actor, Norton supported himself by being a part-time waiter while plowing through a steady stream of auditions and acting classes. He was cast in a number of off-Broadway plays and joined the New York Signature Company before his silver screen debut.

Edward Norton is still a mystery in the entertainment world- a world where the biographies along with every move of all sorts of celebrities are public knowledge - he has kept the details of his private life just that - private. His explanations are simple; the more the public knows about an actors likes and dislikes, the harder it is for the public to believe the role that actor is portraying, and also the fact of the matter is that Edward does not want to see his everyday life become the catalyst for Hollywood gossip.

In 1998, after receiving an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Primal Fear, Norton went on to portray an ex-skinhead who discovers the errors of leading the life of a racist in New Line Cinema's American History X. Norton once again received an Oscar nomination for his brilliantly portrayed role. In keeping with his busy schedule, that same year Edward also went on to star opposite Matt Damon in Rounders, a movie set against the backdrop of New York's high-stakes underground poker world. |
Edward Norton is now starring in one of the most talked about movie of the year, Fight Club, with Brad Pitt. Full of bizarre plot scenarios, Fight Club is a movie about the world of young professional men who enjoy beating each other senseless. Look for the movie to open up nationwide October 15th, 1999.
