Salma Hayek Jimenez was born on September 2nd, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Her father is Lebanese and her mother is Spanish - the mix that gives her such a unique and pretty name. She grew up dedicated to gymnastics, but her parents weren't crazy about that for a career, so for a while she tried a variety of things but wasn't able to find a passion for anything other than performing. So when she turned eighteen years old, she packed her bags and headed to Mexico City to pursue a career in acting.

She got her first role in 1988 with the theater production of ALADINO Y LA LAMPARA MARAVILLOSA. Then, in 1990, she got a role in the theatrical comedy LAS VISITAS TIENEN SUENO. After that, she made a television movie NUEVO AMANECER and, in 1993, she got a big break and landed a role in an American production - Allison Anders' MI VIDA LOCA. In the film, she plays Gata, one of the leading women.

Two years later, in 1995, she got her first big studio movie role next to Antonio Banderas in the Robert Rodriguez film DESPERADO. She was also in the movie FOUR ROOMS, in a segment entitled "The Misbehavers" - also by Robert Rodriguez. One year later she did FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (another film from Rodrigeuz) and FLED, a movie with Laurence Fishburne.

Also in 1996, she filmed FOOLS RUSH IN with 'Friends' star Matthew Perry. This was a big break for her because it was her first leading role. She also gets to star next to Matt Damon in Kevin Smith's upcoming movie DOGMA, next to Will Smith in the upcoming Barry Sonnenfeld film THE WILD WILD WEST, and in the next Robert Rodriguez film THE FACULTY. The Faculty is the eagerly anticipated movie from Dimension Films (a division of Miramax).

In a very short time, Salma Hayek has developed a repuation for being a charming actress, as well as a workaholic for the sheer amount of movies she does - sometimes up to four roles a year. But she's become more than just an incredibly beautiful and exotic woman - although her snake dance scene in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN proves that she hasn't lost her sultry touch.

Her future plans include filming a movie for Mexican television. It's titled EL CORONEL NO TIENE QUIEN LE ESCRIBA, a film based on the book Gabriel Garcia Marquez. With Director Arturo Ripstein behind the camera, it seems that it will be yet another inevitable success in Salma Hayek's career. We're very happy she decided to skip gymnastics.
