Yahoo!'s Web Celeb Uma Thurman

A little known fact about Uma Karuna Thurman is that she is named after a verse from a 'doo-wop' song: pow pow pow uma mow mow pow pow uma mow. Actually, that might not be true - it's not in the official press release - but it sounds reasonable enough, so go ahead and spread the rumor.  If you want some real facts to back it up, you might want to add that she was born on April 29, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts.  Her parents are Robert A.F. Thurman and Nena van Schlebrugge, a Swedish model - big surprise.  She has three brothers, Dechen, Ganden, and Mipam. The Thurman family was raised in the Hindu faith; hence the names.  Uma translates into "Bestower of Blessings" or "The Bright One."

At age fifteen, Uma was discovered by two New York agents during a production of "The Crucible."   When Uma was sixteen she moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting, and it wasn't long before she landed her first leading role in the low budget flick "Kiss Daddy Goodnight."  Her next film, "Johnny Be Good" wasn't exactly a smash hit but things started to look up when she got the role of Venus in Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," played by Robin Williams.

Uma's other films include "Mad Dog and Glory," and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues."  And then, suddenly, everything changed with the role of Mia in Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction."  We'd tell you more about that role but you've probably seen the movie, heard about the movie, and more likely own the movie.

Since her breakthrough role as Mia, Uma has gone on to star in "Beautiful Girls," "The Truth About Cats and Dogs," "A Month By the Lake," "Batman and Robin," and the futuristic "Gattaca," co-starring her husband Ethan Hawke (Uma was briefly married to Gary Oldman in 1990).

In April, 1998, Uma gave birth to Maya Ray.  She is currently starring with Ralph Fiennes in the remake of the 60's cult TV show, The Avengers.
