Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 in Reading,
England. She comes from a family involved in the theatre and always knew she
wanted to be an actress. Winslet has two sisters Anna and Beth. They are stage
actors as is her father and as were her grandparents and uncle. Her mother and
younger brother Joss are not actors.

From age 11 to 16 she attended the Red roofs Theatre School in Maidenhead.
Her first acting job was in a Sugar Puffs commercial dancing with the Honey
Monster. Her TV debut was in the British television drama "Shrinks" (1988).
Kate overcame problems with weight and depression. She was already 5'6" by
the time she was 15 and nicknamed "Blubber" in high school. In spite of it all,
Winslet was determined to become an actress. Immediately after leaving acting
school Winslet became a member of the British cast of the sitcom "Get Back."
She remained in a five year relationship with actor Stephen Tredre from "Dark

Kate's big break came when she was cast as Juliet
Hulme in the movie Heavenly Creatures (1994). The news reached her while she
was working at a delicatessen making pastrami and dill sandwiches. Her debut
won her international recognition, awards and scripts from Hollywood.

| She was signed by the William Morris
Agency while on a promotional trip to New York for the Heavenly Creatures.
Kate then played a role as Princess Sarah in A Kid in King Arthur's Court
(1995). This was followed by her Oscar nominated role of Marianne Dashwood
in Sense and Sensibility (1995).

She became "hot" in Hollywood and also achieved
"sex symbol" status with the critics and gossips. She has been nicknamed
'Corset Kate' (because of all of her period films), 'English Rose' and
'Starlet Express'. Kate has expressed interest in playing an American girl
in a movie or an action role. In 1996 Winslet returned to the movies with
performances in Jude as Sue Bridehead and Ophelia in Hamlet. Los Angeles Magazine has placed her on their list of "The 40 Most Important
People Under 40," and People magazine has declared that Kate is one of the "50
Most Beautiful People" in the world. Winslet has also graced the cover of Vanity
Fair magazine in the company of Cameron Diaz, and Claire Danes.

She is one of the most talented young actresses
in Hollywood and was nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) as "Best Actress" for her
role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the much heralded motion picture Titanic in which she
stars with Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie received a total of 14 Academy Award
nominations. Kate's next starring role is in the independent feature film "Hideous
Kinky," filmed in Morocco.
